Offers of support for the Corfu fire victims

CORFU. Offers of support for the victims of last night΄s fire in Mantouki from the Hoteliers΄ Association, Trade Association, the Church, Regional Administration and Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality.

There has been an immediate response from several organisations to offer support to the victims of Friday night's fire in Mantouki.

The 3-floor building was destroyed - the Fire Department has requested a structural report from the Municipal Department of Technical Works - and three people are being treated in hospital, one of them in the Intensive Care Unit. It is everyone's hope that they will recover as soon as possible.



The victims won't be left without help and support Deputy Regional Governor for Social Welfare Kostas Zorbas told Enimerosi. There will be support for them on all levels.

Kostas Zorbas told Enimerosi that he had spoken with the President of Corfu Hoteliers' Association Babis Voulgaris, who agreed with the Deputy Governor that an immediate solution needs to be found - even temporarily - for the accommodation of these people who lost their homes in one night.

Babis Voulgaris promised that the Hoteliers' Association will take responsibility for finding accommodation for them once they have left hospital.

The victims are a mother and father, who are now in Corfu Hospital, and their 13-year-old daughter; a 58-year-old man, in whose house the fire appears to have started, who is in critical condition and a mother and child who, fortunately, didn't suffer any injuries and didn't need to be hospitalised.



Support from Corfu Trade Association

In addition to the matter of accommodation, the Deputy Governor Kostas Zorbas told Enimerosi that the victims need to be provided with clothing and personal care items.

Mr. Zorbas has been in touch with Stratos Tagatidis from Corfu Trade Association and there will be offers of clothing and personal care items from Association members.

Hospital visit

Representatives from the Association, led by President Giorgos Tseremis, visited the victims at Corfu General Hospital this morning and gave them their best wishes for a speedy recovery along with a promise of support.

Support from the Church

Mr. Zorbas also spoke with Archbishop Nektarios, who promised that the Church will give their support and offer whatever is needed following their nightmare experience.

Municipal Council to discuss on Monday what help can be given

Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality will also help with immediate needs. According to information, the Municipal Council will decide on Monday what assistance can be provided for these people who have lost their property and possessions.

Financial assistance will be discussed along with any care and support that can be given by the Municipal Social Welfare Services.
