Who should clear up the seaweed?

Garitsa

CORFU. For the last 3 weeks Corfu Port Authority and the Municipality have been trying to agree on whose responsibility it is to clear up the seaweed washed up on Garitsa shore road by ΄Victoria΄.

Agreement still hasn't been reached and the seaweed remains on the shore road pavement in Garitsa.

Storm Victoria may have visited the island three weeks ago but as yet nobody has cleared up the piles of seaweed covering the recently-repaired pavement. One has to wonder how difficult it can be to come to an agreement to prevent the image of Corfu deteriorating daily (best-case scenario) or even being destroyed (worst-case scenario).

Responsibility for the shore in Corfu Town is in the process of being handed over from the Port Authority to Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality and in the meantime remains caught between the two without proper...guardianship.

At the moment the town shore officially belongs to the Public Real Estate Corporation, to whom it was passed by Corfu Port Authority before being handed over to the Municipality. This means that officially responsibility to clean up the seaweed lies neither with the Port Authority nor the Municipality as the transfer has not yet been confirmed. So what happens?

This iconic part of Corfu Town remains in a disgraceful state. It seems incomprehensible that for the last three weeks Corfu Port Authority and the Municipality have been passing the buck back and forth as to who should clear up the seaweed covering the shore road!

For many Corfiots the walk along the shore road is part of their daily life - especially these days when the weather has been more like April or September than December. It is unacceptable that they are being deprived of this beautiful stroll.

For years people have been patient whilst the renovation work was being carried out to widen the road and pavement and to repair the sea wall. Now that it has been completed 'officialdom' is once again asking locals to be patient because thay can't decide who is responsible.

After three weeks of discussion and negotiation can the Port Authority and the Municipality find some kind of middle way? Start working from the two ends and meet up at the Douglas Column! One sweeps up and the other collects it in the bags! It's just seaweed not mines!

P.S. By the way, when you do collect it don't throw it away! Plenty of people will want it and you'll be able to sell it!

P.P.S. Enimerosi spoke with Corfu Port Authority Managing Director Spyros Zervopoulos who promised that they would clear up the seaweed on the shore road even though it's not their job....
