CORFU. Mayor Ydraiou said "The appearance of the building will be changing and in two years it will be ready to open as one of the most modern art and cultural venues...Corfu is slowly healing its open wounds, renovating its historical buildings and will become a major attraction."

The Municipality of Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands announced that the tender documents had been approved and amendments made - the Municipality is now responsible - and the invitation for tenders for the renovation and promotion of the Giallinas Mansion is now proceeding.

The Municipality issued the following press release:

The Giallinas Mansion is considered to be a protected monument and there will be reconstruction and restoration work along with redesign of the interior and the immediate surrounding area.

When the work is complete the building will be put to new use.

The ground floor of the gallery will be used for educational and commercial activities and have a restaurant.

The first floor will house an exhibition of works by Angelos Giallinas - 586 watercolours and oil paintings divided into 16 thematic units. The two rooms at the front, due to the wealth of decorations (ceiling paintings, ornate plasterwork etc.), will be a reconstruction of the Giallinas living room and studio with authentic furniture.

The second floor will be a multipurpose area - a meeting room with translation booths, temporary exhibitions, toilets, utility rooms and storage space.

The outbuilding will be used mainly for administrative purposes and there will also be suitable storage space for works not on display.

The Mayor of Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality Meropi Ydraiou said:

"This is a major and significant project which will enhance our town. The Giallinas Mansion was an open wound which was continuously deteriorating and valuable works of art in the basement were at risk.

Now, however, the appearance of the building will be changing and in two years it will be ready to open as one of the most modern art and cultural venues.

I would like to thank all those who have worked hard to get us to this point - first of all, the Giallinas Foundation Board, the Municipal Technical Works Department, the Planning Department and of course the Ionian Islands Regional Administration and the Governor Rodi Kratsa.

Corfu is slowly healing its open wounds, renovating its historical buildings and will become a major attraction."
