CORFU. The decisions of the meeting at the Ministry for Environment are in line with the Society΄s position on waste management.

Temploni & Ropa Valley 'Panagia Sparmiotissa' Cultural & Environmental Society has issued a press release regarding the latest waste management developments following the meeting at the Ministry for the Environment.

They stated that they were happy with the outcome of the meeting in Athens as it is in line with the positions they have always held.

Statement

"It seems that the proposed solution that came from the meeting at the Ministry for the Environment & Energy chaired by Waste Management General Secretary Grafakos will bring relief for Temploni and the whole island. The long-term waste problem in Corfu was discussed at the meeting which was attended by all the Corfu MPs, the Ionian Islands Regional Governor and the three Corfu Mayors.

It was unanimously decided that the mixed waste on Corfu should be removed and taken to Kozani landfill for the next three years until the Waste Management facility in Corfu is completed.

At the meeting the necessity was stressed for continuous sorting at source by residents, recycling and Green Spots in each of the three Municipalities.

It was also stated that Corfu needs a collective effort from all three Municipalities to ensure successfully, integrated waste management. It was decided that three Waste Transfer Stations be set up in North, South and Central Corfu along with Biowaste Processing Units.

This is a significant decision which is in line with what we have always proposed. So we are pleased and hope that the new local authority will continue to fulfil its committments as it has done up to now and the work on the landfill will begin immediately.

Our Society will be continuously monitoring the situation on behalf of the residents of Temploni and the Ropa Valley area."
