130,000 plastic bottles, 10,000 aluminium cans and hundreds of tons of plastic bottle tops have been collected thanks to the efforts of members and friends of Corfu Gymnastics Association.

The project began in April at the 'Be Active' event with the slogan 'Handball and Recycling' in collaboration with the General Sports Secretariat of the Primary Education Department, the Hellenic Handball Federation and T.A.

More and more athletes, parents and guardians are participating in this effort - becoming active in recycling which is also helping to raise public environmental awareness.

This is yet another project at Corfu Gymnastics Association, demonstrating in practice that associations and societies need to extend their activities to include broader social issues - recycling, blood donation, solidarity and so many other actions."

The supervisor of the Handball section Mr. Kangelaris also stated:

"We would like to thank those involved in the collection and transportation of recyclable materials which, when the materials were received, also helped contribute to the to the acquisition of necessary sports equipment, demonstrating that apart from the long-term benefits of these actions there can also be immediate rewards.

The company which collected the materials presented balls to the handball team, which will be competing in the National League for the first time. We are continuing with the work in a more organised way to demonstrate that which is obvious - education in the values of sport leads not only to benefits to the physical and mental health of youngsters, but also to love for the environment and culture."
