CORFU. The fire that has been burning in Old Perithia since Sunday afternoon has been contained and is now abating.
Firefighters battled all night to contain the fires on Pantokrator at Old Perithia. The fire broke out at two locations at 14:50 on Sunday and burned strongly due to the winds which wer Force 4-5. Due to the mountainous area, along with firefighters on land there were 2 PZL firefighting planes, 2 Canadair planes (see a video here) and a helicopter which all dropped water whilst there was light.
Firefighters fought all night and by morning had managed to contain the fire, which is now abating. As yet, it hasn't been necessary for the firefighting planes to be used again. About 100 stremma of farm and forest land has been burnt.
