BORAS (SWEDEN). The European Athletics U20 Championships Borås began on Thursday with Spyridoula Karidi from Corfu taking part in the qualifying round of the triple jump.
It was expected that Spyridoula, with the second best performance in Europe this year, would qualify for the final but it wasn't as easy as the result might seem to indicate.
Both her first two attempts were no-jumps but she didn't seem to be nervous when she came to take her third and final jump. Needing 13.10m to qualify for the final she did 13.63 with the wind against her (-1.5)! This is just 1cm less than her personal best and shows that she is in excellent form. Hopefully she can produce something even better on Saturday and come away with a new Greek record and a medal!
The 12 Qualifiers (this year's personal best in brackets)
Naceva (Bulgaria) - 13.76 (14.13)
Karidi (Greece) - 13.63 (13.64)
