25th March celebrations in Corfu

The celebrations culminated with the parade of students, pupils, disabled war veterans, scouts, guides, armed forces, police, coastguard, fire service and border guards accompanied by Corfu, 'Mantzaros', 'Spyros Samaras' and 'Capodistrias' Philharmonic Bands.

The celebrations started early this morning with Philharmonic Bands playing marches in the central streets of Corfu Town and joyful bell-ringing from all the churches.

At 08:00 the flag was raised at the New Fortress with the participation of Philharmonic Bands and the Armed Forces. This was followed by the Doxology at the Metropolitan Church Spilaiotisis led by Nektarios, Archbishop of Corfu, Paxos and the Diapontia Islands. A formal presentation was given by Spyros Pachis.

At 11:30 there was a Memorial Service and laying of wreaths at the Heroes Monument with the Government representative, the Ionian Islands Regional Governor, the Mayor, Armed Forces Chief and other representatives. This was followed by a minute's silence in remembrance of those that fell.

The Government representative, the Regional Governor and the Mayor of Corfu then laid wreaths at the statue of Ioannis Capodistrias.
