CORFU. Following the death of 8-year-old Anna-Maria a survey was conducted on social media.

"Name the Road": The results of a social media survey of the dangerous roads in Corfu.

Following the death of an 8-year-old girl in a road accident on 16 January and the action of "If", a protest group of residents trying to raise awareness about road safety, on 26 January, the group conducted a survey on Facebook to find the most dangerous roads in Corfu.

Between 8 and 28 February there was a survey poll of the 8,500+ members of the group asking them to "Name the Road" and to give descriptions (location, type and degree of danger along with photos) of one or more dangerous spots on the Corfu road network. Members were able to propose (34 choices), to vote (approx. 3,500 votes) and to evaluate the results in real time.

The results were separated into geographical areas (see below) along with the comments and a small working group came up with the following general conclusions:

1. There are serious problems with the roads - mainly the many potholes, cracks and subsidence and there is also a lack of lighting, pavements and pedestrian crossings in large sections. In the survey it was noted that there is a need for proper road markings, signage, removal of natural obstructions and proper traffic flow as well as there being problems with speeding and violations of the Highway Code.

2. Commercial and other lighted signs are a hindrance to safe driving and need to either be removed or made less bright.

3. For the safety of children more attention needs to be paid to roads around schools. Pedestrian crossings need to be brightly coloured and more brightly lit. where necessary, pavements and traffic islands should be built.

4. At known accident spots such as Alepou (where car and motorbike races have been reported), at the first turning in Kontokali (at the bend with Paramythoupolis), and at the entrances and exits in Kallithea, Kanalia and Tsaros something should be done immediately about controlling traffic flow and/or safe pedestrian crossings and pavements built and proper signage etc. put up.

5. There were some technical difficulties in recording Corfu road danger spots in the social media group and we weren't able to record problems in South Corfu although there were plenty around Corfu Town and in North Corfu.

The publication of this survey electronically and in print and its distribution to the relevant authorities in Corfu Municipality, Ionian Islands Regional Administration and the police will be significant step towards making the island's roads safer.

The group that organised this online survey would like to thank all those who took part and helped in any way.

We are still waiting for a response from the Town Council to a question from 25 residents as to why Corfu Traffic Education Park is still not in operation.

This project was supported by the Facebook Groups 'Corfu Mothers' (4,700 members) and 'Your Complaints to the Mayor (8,700 members) as well as the organization for children's rights 'For Our Children', 'San Giacomo' Cultural Association and Fotini Tzekou Foreign Language School.

The results of the group's survey are available electronically and in print.
