CORFU. Corfu Society for the Protection of the Environment has appealed to the local authority not to cut down the age-old tree as it is part of Kassiopi΄s natural and cultural heritage.

"Having being informed that the age-old elm tree in Kassiopi is going to be cut down, we went to take a look at this old tree which is located in a public space in Kassiopi to see if it really needed to be cut down. There is no danger of it falling and there is no danger of it dying despite the poor-quality pruning - foliage exists and new leaves are appearing. There is a small opening at the bottom of the trunk but this isn't dangerous and can be filled with suitable material.

Something can also be put in this opening to prevent further growth of the roots, although we don't think this is absolutely necessary - if the roots had spread dangerously the slabs in the village would have risen. This hasn't occurred and is unlikely to occur as, taking into account the age of the tree, it would already have happened by now.

From what we have learned this tree was planted before the Union of the Ionian Islands with Greece. Even if this is not the case it is still part of the natural and cultural heritage and is protected by law as a forest tree and as a monument. We consider that there is absolutely no reason for it to be cut down and appeal to the local authority not to proceed unadvisedly in this action."
