CORFU. On Friday the Social Cooperative Enterprise "All Together for the Corfu Environment" will sign a collaborative agreement with the company Reciprocal Recycling S.A.
On Friday the Social Cooperative Enterprise "All Together for the Corfu Environment" will sign an agreement with Hellenic Recycling Corporation. The Social Cooperative Enterprise (KOINSEP) was set up in December 2018 with the following founding members: Spyros Neratzis, Ioanna Giorgota, Laskarina Gerasimou, Petros Agathos, Miltiadis Louvros, Giorgos Zaragas, Spyros Kremonas and Michalis Vrahliotis. the organization's aim is to efficiently coordinate and mange all the voluntary Green Spots already in operation at several locations throughout the island.
Following the signing of the agreement Antapodotiki Anakyklossi (Reciprocal Recycling) S.A. wil bring three units to the island. Spyros Neratzis told Enimerosi that the locations for the units haven't been decided yet but considers that it would be best to have in Corfu Town, one in the north and one in the south (where there are already 'productive' Green Spots in operation).
Following a recent vote at the Town Council the Municipality's only responsibility will be to provide three locations, free, for the units to be set up. According to the agreement, there will be no cost for the Municipality for maintenance, wages or purchase of units - only for the provision of electricity. The Municipality also has the right to collaborate within its area of responsibility with any other organization or alternative management system.
The company, which already operates the Environmental Education & Reciprocal Recycling Park in Lagada, Thessaloniki, will sign agreements with other KOINSEP in Greece, including Corfu. The object of the collaboration is to collect and transport all the recyclable materials collected on the island. In exchange either the public will be rewarded with special offers at supermarkets etc or the KOINSEP, which is a non-profit organization, will receive payment.
How the system works
The Reciprocal Recycling Centres use automatic machines to recycle plastic, metal and glass containers and there are other special machines to recycle other materials (such as paper, laminated paper packaging, plastic bags etc.). In this way sorting at source happens automatically. Members of the public return their used packages and containers and they are automatically given a receipt coupon with the corresponding reciprocal incentive and they receive special offers as a reward for recycling (such as gifts, samples, discount vouchers etc.).
Those participating have the choice to either take voucher for purchases at affiliated shops or to donate the amount due to them to a charitable or community organization via the Social Capital Accumulation System.
