LEFKIMMI. Three cases of sabotage and the SYDISA facility in Mesorachia, Lefkimmi destroyed yet again. It took no longer than half-an-hour for what SYDISA said had just recently been repaired to go up in flames - following the granting of a licence to the landfill just a few hours before.
At approximately 23:30 on Monday night a small group of people wearing hoods approached the security guard, according to what he told the police, threatened him and smashed the spotlight. Five minutes later flares and firecrackers were thrown into the property which quickly burst into flames.
The guard was able to contact the police but when the police van arrived it found a burning blockade both on the main road and the access road to the facility. Furious residents threw stones and rocks at the police vehicle.
When police and firefighters managed to eventually reach the facility after midnight the firefighters had to yet again put out a fire which had once more destroyed the equipment at the landfill.
The geomembrane which was to be laid at the landfill had been set on fire just a few days ago.
Two weeks ago the electricity poles were sawn through leading to the power supply being cut and the property being in complete darkness. A section of the perimeter fencing had also been cut allowing access to the property from behind.
Today police are gathering whatever evidence they can.
Yet again Lefkimmi landfill has been destroyed.
