CORFU. This latest act of destruction was the immediate response to the granting of a licence to Lefkimmi landfill.

Early on Tuesday morning unknown persons set fire to the facility which had recently been repaired following the fire last May. The fire broke out inside the building and firefighters responded immediately to get it under control. Nevertheless, serious damage was caused to the building, the electrical system, the generator and what remained of the membranes.

Earlier, a blockade had been set up on the main road near the landfill with tyres and wooden palettes being set on fire.

The Ionian Islands Regional Governor Theodoros Galiatsatos posted the following: "The so-called 'movements' (of the night) yet again destroyed public property tonight.

For the umpteenth time they set fire to the Lefkimmi landfill facility (generators and electrical panels) after having first set up a blockade to obstruct the fire engines.

Impunity is bearing fruit and the Corfu prosecutors are concerned about whether the landfill site has archaeological remains!

It is time for everyone to shoulder their  responsibilities - one way or the other."
