CORFU. Temploni Cultural Society commented on what was said at the meeting with political and professional representatives in which the Mayor gave an update on the waste management plan.
Temploni Cultural Society, which has been fighting against environmental damage of its region for years, issued the following statement:
"On Tuesday Mayor Kostas Nikolouzos held a meeting with local political and professional organizations at the Park Hotel behind closed doors. It is clear that the exclusion of ourselves, the Temploni residents - who are the real victims of the Municipality's criminal activities to date, and the media was deliberate and raises questions and doubts about the 'hidden' waste management plan.
At the meeting, according to those who were there, nothing happened other than further steps being taken to fulfil the Municipality's plan to the detriment of Temploni residents which of course won't be able to happen in the time remaining in their term of office. It is clear that their intention is to finish off the Temploni area by continuing their criminal activities at our expense, exarcerbating the already degraded and run-down condition of the environment that we live in - condemning us to certain death.
The purchase of the 52-stremma plot of land next to the landfill to deposit the existing waste bales and another plot that they say they are GOING TO purchase will do nothing other than extend the tragic conditions which we can see today - thousands of tons of unburied rubbish. And if today the area has been criminally degraded and residents are suffering, the new Nikolouzos plan will just line us all up in front of the firing squad. When are they going to understand that the baler solution is completely obsolete and grossly inadequate? This has already been proved!!! Mr. Nikolouzos and the others who are responsible need to understand that they are not just damaging the environment but condemning Temploni residents to certain death.
It is inconceivable, with the mismanagement of the waste to date as reported following the two site inspections, that all the local authority can propose as a responsible solution is the extension of today's tragic conditions!"
