CORFU. Afra Primary School once again took first place in the Ionian Islands Educational Robotics Competition.

This means that they have qualified for the finals in Athens.

The theme of this year's competition was renewable energy sources in the islands. The pupils Alexandros Zotos, Stella Theodoridou, Artemis Loubranou, Angelos Pigis, Emmanuella Rengi and Nepheli Tsavou along with their teacher Eleftheria Marini and the IT teacher Kostas Daglis, influenced by the refuse problem on the island, decided to try and find possible solutions for Corfu.

The recycler (the robot) was programmed to move and bend and transferred recyclable materials (paper, plastic, aluminium) to the recycling facility where it was then processed and electrical energy produced which can cover the needs of the islands - especially Corfu - thus replacing the use of lignite and reducing the amount of waste, which has been such a problem for the island.

The WRO Hellas (World Robot Olympiad) Final will take place in Athens in collaboration with Cosmote on 23 February.
