CORFU. Two British friends have been at the heart of a wonderful initiative in Liapades over the last six months.
Ian Smith and Lesley Cummings have chosen to live most of the year in Liapades. They became part of the community and got involved in doing something about the waste problem - specifically through recycling.
They decided to take action and not to just complain about the situation so they helped build a group of volunteers to sort waste at source and then recycle. There was a tremendous response from Liapades residents who were keen to help in this effort which is ultimately for their own benefit - for all the families and children living there. This spread to the surrounding area, including Magoulades (a special mention for Irene Vasilaki), Poulades, Giannades and other places.
The project has been going for 6 months now and these are some of the statistics:
- 335 blue refuse bins have been filled
- 6 'bell' bins for glass
- Approximately 220kg plastic bottle tops have been collected
The group's next target is to find a covered space to collect recyclable materials. They have been getting a positive response from businesses in the area, who have been given 'awards' for their efforts and contribution! These include the Athena supermarket, Gouis Winery ('champions' as they have been called) and Corfu Pearl Hotel.
The volunteers have said, "The acceptance of this effort by businesses can be considered - and is - a service to the consumers". The locals have expressed a big "thank you" (it's the least we can do) "to our British friends for their contribution to our village."
