CEPHALONIA. The large fire that broke out just after 8pm on Wednesday has been partially brought under control.
Firefighters battled the flames all night and the first houses in the village were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Matters were made worse by the strong winds in the Ionian yesterday - reaching Force 10. The fire had three fronts and 8 fire engines, 16 firefighters and volunteers fought to contain it. They are all still in the area due to the danger of the fire spreading.
There was a second fire in Cephalonia yesterday in the village of Vlachata but the Fire Service and local residents were able to quickly get it under control.
