CORFU. "They should solve the problem that they themselves have created and save their international image which they themselves have damaged," says the Police Federation.
In a statement, the Police Federation said, "Following the decision of the Federation Board regarding involvement on a local level, the Presidency of the Federation will be going to Corfu tomorrow to meet with colleagues from all over Greece who are involved in maintaining public safety and order due to the ongoing failure to find a solution to the major problem of refuse collection and waste management in the area.
The Federation would like to stress once again to all concerned that this is a local problem that hasn't been solved for various reasons and has been allowed to escalate in an unacceptable way - reaching the point where there are conflicts similar to a civil war. The Greek Police was called upon to deal with a problem belonging to the local and regional authorities as well as the government and which nobody is taking the responsibility to solve on a community level rather than to exploit it on a political and party political level.
As is its responsibility our union will carry out its duty to protect the interests of the police being called upon to follow orders under adverse and dangerous conditions. The Greek policeman is in no way to blame and doesn't deserve to be derided by the public for the incompetency and responsibility of others.
The competent authorities should take responsibility instead of using the police force and wasting the precious money of the Greek people in dangerous games.
They should solve the problem that they themselves have created and save their international image which they themselves have damaged.
