Big demonstration against riot police and use of Lefkimmi landfill

LEFKIMMI. South Corfu residents held a big demonstration at the crossroads leading to Lefkimmi landfill with chants and banners protesting against the presence of the police.
The protest rally was organized by Lefkimmi Cultural Society and residents were protesting against the strong police presence in their area and the transfer of waste to the landfill. They faced off against riot police (MAT) squads who have been on the island for the last two weeks.
At 10 o'clock at night police opened the road to let vehicles, including buses with tourists, through to the port for the ferry boat. The vehicles passed through the crowds of protestors.
Immediately afterwards the demonstrators proceeded ttowards the centre of Lefkimmi.
