Temploni cells closed down permanently: Solid Waste Management Organization fined

CORFU. The decision to close down the three cells (A, B & C) at Temploni landfill came from the Ionian Islands Regional Governor on the recommendation of the responsible department. Administrative penalties and fine were also imposed on SYDISA.

The Regional Governor issued the following statement in a press release:

"Adhering to the basic principles for the protection of the environment and the need to apply the environmental regulations defined in the Regional Waste Management Plan (PESDA), the Regional Governor Theodoros Galiatsatos,  following the reccomendation of the relevant regional department, ordered the depositing of waste at the cells (A, B & C) at Temploni landfill to cease permanently and only the other facilities to remain in operation as per the provisions in PESDA which still remain in force as regards the interim period of solid waste management.

This decision also obliges SYDISA in Corfu to implement the plan for the complete renovation of Temploni landfill.  Administrative fines have been imposed on SYDISA to a total of 190,000 Euros - 100,000 for violation of environmental regulations and 90,000 for violation of the law 29407/3508/02.

Furthermore, SYDISA will be fined 1,000 Euros for every day it violates the order to cease depositing waste at cells A, B & C."
