CORFU. With another 300 riot police (MAT) expected to arrive on Tuesday the number of those present on the island will double. From the early hours this morning they put their plan into action - blocking off all side streets leading onto the main Lefkimmi road and, of course, all those leading to the landfill facility in Mesorahia, Lefkimmi.
According to hotel employees, the first 300 arrived in Corfu on Monday evening and were accommodated in hotels between the town and Lefkimmi to begin, from what it seems, a long period of ... police tourism!
On Tuesday morning their aim was to provide protection for the contractor repairing the access road to the landfill and they will also escort the lorries with the waste bales when they begin to transfer them from Temploni. From early in the morning local residents gathered opposite the MAT at the crossroads. The local Communist Party issued a statement and the local Golden Dawn MP Mr. Aivatidis is also there.
The Hotel Employees Union has called its members to a general meeting in Argyrades tonight at 20:00 in order to organize their opposition to the presence of riot police and to the operation of the Lefkimmi landfill.
