LEFKIMMI. The arrival of a strong police presence in Lefkimmi has created tension and turmoil amongst the local residents.

According to reports from the locals, there are 13 MAT squads spread throughout South Corfu and the road leading to Lefkimmi landfill has been blocked off.

The President of Lefkimmi Cultural Society told Enimerosi: "The whole of the perimeter has been blocked off - there are 13 MAT squads and they don't allow anyone to approach. When we were at the Town Council meeting last night the Mayor told us that he didn't know anything about it - that he had spoken with the police chief in charge of the operation and he didn't know anything. I call on every democratic citizen of Corfu not to allow this. Nothing can come about through repression. I call on all Corfu citizens to come out on the street and protest - this isn't only about Lefkimmi, it's about the whole of Corfu."
