CORFU. All day yesterday groups of musicians from the island΄s Philharmonic Societies performed in various central locations.

June 21 is internationally recognized as World Music Day, coinciding with the official beginning of summer. Over the last few years World Music Day has also been celebrated in Corfu. From the morning yesterday, groups of musicians from the island's philharmonic bands performed in various central locations.

In the evening the Formation Band (conductor: Spyros Kakarougas) and the Percussion Section (conductors: Marios Mouzakitis & Nikos Metallinos) from the 'Old' Corfu Philharmonic Society treated the public to a special performance in the Lower Square. Along with the pieces that we have all come to love, they played an impressive orchestrated version of the best known Greek music worldwide - the sirtaki!

There followed a concert at the Philharmonic Society hall from the young pianist Melina Merianou and the Pupils' Orchestra and Piccolo Orchestra conducted by Flora Klimi.

In the evening the 'Mantzaros' Philharmonic Society put on its traditional Body Music concert in the colonnade of the Palace of St. Michael and St. George, conducted by Spyros Mavropoulos and with the baritone soloist Pantelis Kontos.
