CORFU. A large number of people attended the opening of the port.

Erikoussa is the northernmost of the Diapontia Islands on the north western Greek border. The port was officially opened this weekend following the completion of the ‘Erikousa Port expansion’ project which began at the end of 2016 as part of the Ionian Islands Business Plan 2014-2020.

The opening ceremony was attended by the following: General Secretary for ports in the Marine Ministry, Christos Lambridis; Chief of the Hellenic Navy General Staff, Vice Admiral N. Tsounis; Chief of the Hellenic Coastguard, Vice Admiral Stamatiou Raptis and Ionian Islands Regional Governor, Theodoros Galiatsatos.

Also present were the Deputy Regional Governor for Corfu, Nikoletta Pandi; Mayor of Corfu, Kostas Nikolouzos; Corfu MPs Fotini Vaki and Kostas Pavlidis; Corfu Port Authority President Spyros Stefanidis; Noni Mastora and Theodoros Loukanaris.

The construction cost 4m Euros and was funded by the Public Investment Programme and the EU European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as well as other national funds.

The new port was constructed on the site of the old one, expanding the jetty, constructing land infrastructure and approach roads and creating a harbour basin of 2.6 hectares that can accommodate more than 100 fishing or tourist vessels as well as ferry boats.

Extra ferry boats operated from Corfu port in order to allow visitors and guest of honour to attend. The celebratory events began on Saturday with the Kassiopi – Erikoussa Regatta and the programme of events also included the following:

- Open-sea swimming race (approximately 1400m) open to all – co-organized with NAOK.
- Musical programme with the Capodistrias Philharmonic Band and the local ‘Dimodokos’ Choir.
- Photography exhibition, possibly with a short talk, presenting Erikousa’s naval history.
