CORFU. Catch up on what happened in Corfu this week.
It was quite a big week for tourism this week in Corfu. A group of American travel agents who had been attending the ASTA annual conference (Destination EXPO 2018) in Athens were invited to Corfu for a 2-day fam trip in the hope that they will send more of their customers here. They had the opportunity to experience first-hand all that the island has to offer.
There was also the 5th Corfu Symposium on Managing and Marketing Places, which included an open Forum on Wednesday with members of the local business and tourism community. Last weekend a small delegation from the San Giacomo Cultural Society in Corfu attended a meeting in Venice to tackle the problem of ‘overtourism’ and the effect of mass tourism on local populations. A Mediterranean network was established at the meeting, which includes Corfu, Crete and Rhodes as well as Paphos in Cyprus. San Giacomo had this to say on their return.
A delegation from India, invited by the Greek Cricket Federation which is based in Corfu, met with the Municipality and the Regional Administration. The Corfu Food & Wine Festival is fast approaching and another distinguished chef – from Russia – has accepted an invitation to participate. The local cuisine was also the focus of a meeting at the Chamber of Commerce to present the Culinary Destinations Project.
Turning to the seemingly perennial problem of rubbish and cleaning up. Regional Environmental Inspectors visited the Temploni landfill and local residents also made a short video of what is happening in the facility. More and more volunteers are getting involved in cleaning up and this weekend work was done at the Lefkimmi Salt Lakes. And talking of cleaning up, the Civil Protection Department reminded everyone to cut and clear their long grass as summer is coming up and anything which could be a fire hazard needs to be removed.
Talking of summer coming up, it seems that we may have a problem with the roads (to put it mildly) as work on repairs still hasn’t started!
Young people were also in the news this week. There was a two-day Digital Creativity Festival for school pupils to present their projects and to celebrate International Dance Day, children’s dance groups put on a special event at the Municipal Theatre. In a different vein, pupils at Afra Primary School wrote and presented a letter to the Mayor complaining about the rubbish and stray animals. A young Corfu athlete, Spyridoula Karydi, broke the national triple jump record for girls.
A woman was found dead outside the OKANA building near San Rocco Square last weekend and this week’s autopsy showed that she died from a fall.
Meanwhile, the Mayor has been in New York with a delegation from Corfu and spoke to the Greek diaspora there this week.
Finally, let’s not forget (or perhaps let’s try and forget!) the dust cloud from Africa that hung over the island for several days.
