The week in review
CORFU. Catch up on what happened in Corfu this week.
Easter is coming up very quickly – just two weeks to go – and the programme of events over the Easter period was announced this week. This weekend we had a festival of another kind – the 21st Corfu Folklore Festival with 31 dance groups performing over 3 days. Another national celebration – 25th March had to contend with the weather and unfortunately, the parade had to be cancelled.
Easter in Corfu means tourism and one wonderful little aid to tourists came out this week – the Corfu art map, which is free of charge. Visitors can also find all 18 of Corfu’s museums on the website Museum Finder. The small island of Paxos, to the south of Corfu, will be having a festival of contemporary art this summer.
Regulations for open-top tourist buses and quad bikes were also in the news, as was the setting up of a Faculty of Tourism at the Ionian University. A Corfu hotel received Certification from China which leads to the hope that a new tourist market is opening up for the island. It wasn’t all good news though, as it was announced that the condition of the Annunciata Monument is deteriorating and could even be a danger to passers-by,
There was thought to be a buyer for the former Club Med site near Dassia but things weren’t so sure the following day.
Lefkimmi Cultural Society reiterated that they don’t want the landfill to operate there. However, there was a meeting of various cultural societies and other organizations to decide how to work together with the local authorities to improve the recycling operation on the island. It seems that several local groups are taking it on themselves to clean up their areas – we had Gouvia and Kanoni this week and there is work planned for the Sotiriotisa seafront this coming week. Environmental awareness was also demonstrated with the municipality taking part in Saturday’s Earth Hour.
The scouts did a magnificent job last weekend when they collected 3 tons of foodstuffs and basic necessities to distribute to those in need!
And finally, let’s not forget the 12-year-old Corfu water-skier who received an award this week.
