CORFU. Catch up on what happened in Corfu this week.
Last weekend was of course Easter weekend – the biggest event in the Corfu calendar. The midnight sky lit up with fireworks on Saturday as everyone celebrated the Resurrection and there were also parades in town on the morning of Easter Day. The mayor, Kostas Nikolouzos, declared afterwards that everything had gone smoothly.
Easter is a huge magnet for tourists and there are other good indications for tourism on the island this year. There were announcements this week that Jet2com and the Lufthansa group are increasing flights to Corfu and a press conference was held to announce the 2nd Corfu International Choir Festival in September. Work to upgrade Corfu Airport continues and following concerns about parking, Fraport clarified the situation.
Several of the largest American travel agencies will be visiting the island later this month for a familiarization trip. Direct ferry services between the Ionian Islands will also be operating this year, starting on May 1st. The tourism industry is not without its problems, however, and Gelina Hotel employees held a demonstration this week demanding that the wages due to them be paid.
Easter Week did have its problems though – with refuse collection. In many areas on the island rubbish has been piling up and in some cases blocking the roads. The Mayor explained the personnel problem and went on to say that refuse collection would, of necessity, be contracted out. The proposal was approved at a Town Council meeting. Meanwhile, persons unknown showed their opposition to the opening of the Lefkimmi landfill by digging a huge trench around the facility, making access impossible. You can see a video of the trench here. Temploni residents, on the other hand, said that they won’t take any further action regarding their landfill until the 2-month ‘truce’ runs out in early May.
Another Corfu event that is attracting more and more attention is the Corfu Mountain Trail. One of the trails in the event is the 104km Night and Day Trail which set off on Saturday evening and finished on Sunday morning.
A delegation from Corfu, led by the Mayor, was invited to New York by the Greek Diaspora there and will take part in the big parade on 5th Avenue next weekend.
Finally, there was the tragedy of the Greek Mirage pilot whose plane fell in the sea near the island of Skyros and in Corfu on Saturday evening, a young woman was found dead outside OKANA in San Rocco Square.
