CORFU. Catch up on what happened in Corfu this week.

This week let’s start with some of the improvements that are underway in Corfu. Work is progressing steadily on the seafront at Garitsa and hopefully the town will acquire the lovely seafront walk it deserves. The leeward jetty at Corfu Port should be ready soon for the ferries to berth there and for the East Port Entrance to open. , although there are concerns about Spilia Marina. And good news for Gastouri parents and children – the primary school will be rebuilt fully equipped on the site of the old school.

Just because we didn’t start the review with the ‘R’ problems doesn’t mean they have gone away! Enimerosi did some reports on the problems of roads and rubbish on the island. You can see the state of the roads in north Corfu here and see how we are filling up with makeshift rubbish dumps all over the place here.

The 62-year-old ex-policeman who was arrested for shooting his wife has been remanded in custody until the trial. Meanwhile, there was another shooting this week – thankfully with no fatalities – with 5 injuries in Ag. Ioannis.

The tourism season is fast approaching and Corfu Municipality has announced the locations for sunbed and umbrella rentals that are open to bids. EasyJet has announced even more flights coming to the Ionian Islands this year and the Ionian cuisine continues to be promoted with pruducers taking part in the FoodExpo exhibition in Athens for the first time. At another exhibition – in Moscow – the Deputy Regional Governor for Tourism decided that perhaps if he sang a song more people would be attracted to out islands! Finally, take a look at this article on the state of Kavos, one of the most popular of our resorts, in the winter.

Four NATO minesweepers arrived at Corfu port on Saturday to enjoy a bit of rest and recreation for a couple of days following their nearby exercise this week.

And Prince Charles and Camilla accepted an invitation from the Greek President and will be paying a visit to Athens in May.
