Followgreen: An internet platform for recycling in Ioannina

IOANNINA. An integrated, innovative environmental awareness programme which rewards members of the public.
The Municipality of Ioannina has set up ‘Followgreen’ – an integrated, innovative environmental awareness programme which rewards members of the public. The programme, which is a municipal initiative, is based on an internet platform of a ‘smart’ town that brings together residents, local businesses and schools.
The aim is to encourage recycling and protection of the environment by rewarding residents for learning about and participating in environmental activities.
Residents in the Municipality of Ioannina can visit the website www.followgreen.gr/ioannina and create their own account in just 1 minute by registering their name and address in order to:
1. Collect reward points in the following ways:
- Take part in quiz games, watch videos and read articles recycling.
- Recycle at the existing facilities (containers and reuse spots) in their neighbourhood and/or at central municipal locations (blue bins in the neighbourhood for paper/plastic/metal packages, blue bell-bins for glass at reuse spots such as community shops/chemists for food, clothing, medication, household items for which they will receive a reward coupon etc).
- Recommend the platform to friends in the Municipality in order to increase support.
- Suggest efficient recycling methods and examples by sending photos and articles for publication on the platform.
2. Cash in the reward points:
- Directly at special sales and other offers in local Ioannina shops and/or
- By donating to schools for future recycling programmes.
With one click Ioannina residents can save their reward coupon on their mobile phone or print it out and use it for their local shopping.
Local Businesses in Ioannina:
1. Responded with approximately 70 offers before the platform even started operating.
2. Are advertised on the internet platform (logo, name, contact details, description of their offer) and can be seen by local residents as well as site visitors from other areas.
3. Can promote their products and services to a wider public with special sales and strengthen their business with customers who are members of the platform.
4. Bear no administrative, bureaucratic or financial burden for participating in the programme, which is free. Apart from the participation form nothing else is sent to the Municipality.
In this way local businesses reward the public’s recycling efforts, help protect the town’s environment and strengthen their businesses in an environmental way.
With this initiative, the Municipality of Ioannina is helping to raise environmental awareness in the public, enhancing its existing social infrastructure such as community shops/chemists with food, clothing, medication, household items etc, increasing recycling at the existing municipal facilities and reducing the amount of mixed refuse. It is also strengthening the local economy and businesses by offering free promotion to local residents as well as to the wider public in other regions. There will also be a recycling competition for school pupils for specific materials (e.g. paper, batteries) giving residents the opportunity to reward and support schools of their choice by donating reward points to them, thus encouraging healthy competition between pupils and schools.
