CORFU. The discussion was about two-year compulsory state pre-school education.

The Mayor of Corfu, Kostas Nikolouzos, met with the board of the Association of Primary and Nursery School Teachers yesterday afternoon. They met to discuss two-year compulsory state pre-school education.

The Association asked for the Mayor’s agreement and support for their basic demand – the immediate implementation of two-year pre-school education and continuity with primary education via a smooth transition from nursery school to primary school. The teachers stressed that this needs to commence in September.

Mr. Nikolouzos agreed with their position and pointed out that the Mayor can’t have a different view from those who are responsible. He proposed that a 5-member working committee be set up to deal with the practical issues – especially that of school buildings.

It was also decided that a public statement be issued in the next few days directed at parents, which will call on them to enrol their children in nursery school. The statement will highlight the advantages of compulsory two-year pre-school education which creates continuity with the general education system.
