The week in review

CORFU. Catch up on what happened in Corfu this week.

The main news this week was of course the tragic killing of the 56-year-old woman in South Corfu by her husband – an ex-policeman. He gave himself in afterwards and his appearance before the magistrate to face charges and enter his plea has been set for Tuesday.

The issue of waste management didn’t go away, although this week the protestors at Temploni landfill lifted their blockade of the facility following written commitments from the Mayor and a two-month truce is now in place. The Mayor also held a meeting with all the local political parties and other involved organizations to update them on the situation. Those involved in tourism, however, have expressed their grave concern about the effect that the rubbish on the island will have in the upcoming tourist season.

Tourism will hopefully get a boost from the Food & Wine Festival in May and the promo video for the event was released. There was also a positive development regarding hydroplanes with Corfu, Paxos and Patra being granted licences for waterways. It was also announced that the new roundabout at the east port entrance will have a fountain installed.

The problem of the roads has also not disappeared – we can see here the landslips and mudslides caused by the weather. Good news finally for the Solari road, though, which has been ‘patiently’ waiting over the last 13 years for something to be done. The contractor has signed and work will now begin on the road between Alykes and Platytera.

This week we had the National Day against Bullying and School Violence and it was good to see children taking part. A 200-voice choir performed at the Municipal Theatre and pupils at Afra Primary School had their own special event.

Bids were accepted for hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation in four areas of Greece, including a block in the South Ionian Sea.

NATO ships and planes are currently in the region as they take part in an exercise north of Corfu. A squadron of minesweepers will then dock in Corfu port next weekend for a spot of rest and recreation.

Corfu’s talented young high jumper, Panayiota Dosi, received an award this weekend as Best Greek Girl Athlete along with her father, who is her coach.

And finally, the swimming pigs! Fishermen came across two wild boars swimming in the Ionian Sea and guided them safely back to shore. See the video here.
