CORFU. Catch up on what happened in Corfu this week.
Dominating the news this week was the stabbing of a 50-year-old Briton and his 29-year-old partner in the village of Kato Korakiana last Sunday. The alleged perpetrator – a 30-year-old Pakistani national – was arrested the following day and after appearing before the magistrate was remanded in custody.
There have been costume all week in Corfu as we come to the final weekend in the Carnival period. Saturday saw a wonderful parade with Venetian costumes, taking us back to another era. Monday is the first day of Lent – Clean Monday. A day to fly kites and there is an open invitation to spend the day in Erimites.
Some good news that people have been waiting a long time to hear is the new ferry network connecting the Ionian Islands, which will come into operation at the beginning of May. No need to go to the mainland any more if you want to travel to another Ionian Island. The timetable for the ferry service was published and the ticket prices will be available shortly.
Three young Corfu athletes came back from the Balkan Under-20 Championships with medals and one of them, Panayiota Dosi, was selected for the full Greek team participating in the indoor athletics meeting in Istanbul this weekend.
In other news, Corfu General Hospital now has another kidney specialist and the large hole that appeared in the road in Temploni due to subsidence was inspected by a team from the Geological Institute – see what they had to say here.
Here’s hoping that you all enjoy Clean Monday. Kala Koulouma!
