CORFU. Catch up on what happened in Corfu this week.

This week in Corfu we have segued smoothly from New Year Cakes into Carnival costumes – with Easter coming relatively early this year, we’ve had an overlap between the two traditions this week.

The official Carnival programme was announced and things got underway in the Old Town Hall (San Giacomo) Square on Wednesday. On Saturday we had the traditional Carnival Treasure Hunt with three prize-winners plus one for the best costume.

On the perennial Corfu waste management problem – the Mayor declared that removing the waste bales from Corfu in the interim period was the ‘final solution’. Residents of Lefkimmi agree with the solution but Temploni residents are not so happy. In the meantime, the municipality is making contact with locations on the mainland that may be willing to accept our rubbish.

Waste is not the only matter that the Mayor deals with and this week he signed a Friendship and Collaboration Agreement with the Mayor of Novi Sad, Serbia. He also reshuffled some of the responsibilities of deputy mayors.

A Corfu man who went fishing and didn’t return was, unfortunately, found dead in the sea by the search and rescue unit. In other news, a student suffered burnt hands in a fire in his flat in Campiello and in another house fire in Pelekas fortunately there were no casualties. A 73-year-old man was airlifted from Corfu Hospital to Ioannina in order to receive more advanced medical attention.

Corfu Hospital was also in the news with the statement from the Director that for the first time the hospital was using up all the funding it received from central government.

Possible good news for tourism with the announcement that an invitation for tender is being put out for contractors to complete the work at Spilia Marina – making it available for tourist yachts.

And finally, our congratulations to the three young Corfu athletes who came back with two gold medals and a bronze from the Balkan Under-20 Championships in Sofia this weekend.
