The week in review
CORFU. Catch up on what happened in Corfu this week.
Yet again this week waste management was at the forefront of the news in Corfu. The Town Council held a long, protracted meeting on the subject and unanimously decided to remove the waste from the island in the interim period. Lefkimmi and Temploni residents were at the meeting in large numbers and after the decision Lefkimmi felt vindicated but Temploni residents were disappointed and have threatened that they may take further action.
Paxos, in the meantime, is requesting that it be disconnected from Corfu in the matter of waste management.
The Corfu businessman who had been admitted to the hospital ICU following his cardiac arrest did not recover and his family took the brave decision to donate his organs. The ICU director expressed gratitude to the family and encouraged others to register as organ donors.
A Corfu family living in the USA have made appeals for bone marrow donors to save their 6-month-old son, who is suffering from a rare disease affecting his immune system and desperately needs a transplant.
There are again positive signs regarding Corfu tourism. The Mayor promoted the island at an inter-regional meeting in Moscow and the Sunday Times published an article about Easter in Corfu. EasyJet announced additional flights from Berlin to Corfu this summer. And there is, of course, the Food and Wine Festival to be held in May, for which preparations are well under way.
Continuing the culinary theme, a team of Corfu chefs won gold at the Expotrof ‘Greek Chef 2018’.
