CORFU. Catch up on what happened in Corfu this week.

Waste management dominated the news in Corfu once again. The week started with a demonstration outside the Temploni landfill and ended with one against the Lefkimmi landfill. A report published by the Technical Chamber also made it quite clear what it thought needed to be done in Temploni. In the meantime, Paxos is ready and waiting to send its waste – 8 months’ worth – to Corfu. On the plus side, however, it was announced that Corfu would be included in ESPA funding for studies into the implementation of Integrated Waste Management.

Temploni wasn’t in the news only for the problems with waste management – a huge ‘crater’ opened up in the road (3 metres deep, if you please!) and a blue bus went up in flames!

Port police spent the beginning of the week trying to find a hit-and-run driver who had been involved in an accident with a delivery motorcyclist on Monday morning on the coastal road outside the port. They were able to eventually locate him and the 23-year-old motorcyclist, who had been taken to hospital, was discharged with no serious injuries.

The Municipal budget was announced this week by the Deputy Mayor for Finance, Georgios Pantelios. It will be higher than last year.

Tourism, as always, was in the news this week. Corfu Mayor, Kostas Nikolouzos, travelled to Moscow to promote the island as a tourist destination at an inter-regional meeting there. The Municipality also announced that civil wedding ceremonies will not be held exclusively at town halls and will be opened up to other venues, thus helping to develop wedding tourism in Corfu. The 2018 programme for cruise ship arrivals was also announced.

Finally, good news on the medical front – 2 new auxiliary doctors were taken on at the hospital and a child psychiatrist appointed.
