CORFU. Mayor Kostas Nikolouzos told Enimerosi that he is going to meet with the Action Committee – which has set up a blockade at Temploni landfill – to update its members on what was said at the recent meeting at the Ministry of the Interior.

Given the response of the Ministers of the Interior and Environment, the Mayor will discuss with the Committee how the municipality can implement a road map for waste management on the island, in accordance with existing law, that will put an end once and for all to the rubbish on the streets and to the tension that has been created.

The road map will include:

-         - The assistance of the relevant ministries as regards funding, licensing and the strict monitoring of agreed actions and their implementation.

-         - Speeding up the process of licensing the Lefkimmi landfill to allow the processing of waste in parallel with the drawing up of a clear road map for the gradual reduction and eventual cessation of the facility’s use over the next three to four years.

The new model should guarantee the recycling process and provide a long-term solution to waste management in Corfu.
