CORFU. Locals hung banners on the gates of the landfill and claimed that there was a strong mobilization of residents. Temploni Cultural Society, who are organizing a public meeting tomorrow, are not connected with this group.

A group of people from the Action Committee staged a protest at the Temploni landfill on Saturday morning. It was reported that they had occupied the facility – however, this was not confirmed by either the local authority or the police.

According to Corfu Mayor Kostas Nikolouzos, who is returning from Athens this evening, the employees are all working normally. Waste is not taken there on Saturday mornings, so the intentions of the protestors to block the facility’s operation did not affect anything.

Mr. Nikolouzos told Enimerosi that he had spoken with the police and requested their assistance in ensuring that the normal operation of the facility isn’t impeded.

The Committee’s representative Christos Ouzounoglou told Enimerosi that local residents were determined to do whatever it takes.

“They have already transferred the compost and the stench can be smelt for up to 20 or 30 kilometres. If the bales remain as they are, in the summer there will be problems throughout central Corfu. We demand a solution from the local authority.”

The Committee is demanding that the waste bales be removed from Temploni – without saying where they should go – and that the landfill and baler operate properly in the interim period. It also wants work to begin immediately to restore the Units and for no further waste management to take place in Central Corfu.
