Drink-driving and speeding in Traffic Police ‘Top 5’

IONIAN ISLANDS. Police in the Ionian Islands carried out intensive checks to prevent road traffic accidents and deal with dangerous driving on 16th and 17th February, during the Carnival and Clean Monday celebrations.
Special traffic police units were set up in Corfu, Lefkada, Cephalonia and Zakynthos aimed at preventing dangerous traffic offences such as speeding, drink-driving, illegal overtaking etc., as well as dealing with behaviour that was likely to lead to serious traffic accidents.
In detail, the following data emerged from the checks:
- There were 27 police control units.
- 722 vehicles were checked.
- There was a total of 318 traffic offences - 164 in Corfu, 47 in Cephalonia, 70 in Zakynthos and 37 in Lefkada.
The following were the main offences:
47 - drink-driving
38 - speeding
21 - not using a crash helmet
15 - not using a seat-belt
5 – running a red light
