CORFU. “We need to deal with this dead end we find ourselves in calmly and prudently,” said the Mayor following a meeting at the town hall.

There was a charged atmosphere at the meeting about the transportation of waste at the mayor’s office. All those locally involved in this major issue were present at the meeting, the purpose of which was basically to prepare for a visit to the relevant ministries, where the matter of temporarily transporting waste away from Corfu can be explored.

At the meeting a committee was set up, which will meet with the ministries in Athens to discuss the removal of waste bales from Corfu during the interim period. The committee will be composed of the mayor, the leaders of the local parties, the Chamber of Commerce and representatives from Lefkimmi and Temploni residents’ associations. Local MPs and Regional representatives may accompany the committee at their discretion.

The following were present at the meeting: Spyros Aspiotis, Deputy Mayor for Cleansing Services, the presidents of Lefkimmi and Temploni cultural societies, Corfu MP Fotini Vaki, leaders of the local parties and their councillors, Nikoletta Pandi , Deputy Regional Governor for Corfu, Christos Moraitis, President of the Regional Council, Georgios Hondroyiannis, President of the Chamber of Commerce and a representative from the Technical Chamber of Greece.

On behalf of Temploni cultural society, the president Magda Papanikolaou declared that they will not participate in the representative committee to visit Athens, although they support the decision to transport waste bales. As regards the funding, she said that this was the responsibility of the relevant bodies.

One of the Temploni societies ‘Panayia Sparmiotissa’ left during the meeting, with the President Alekos Alamanos complaining that the whole thing was just a mockery. He told Enimerosi, “As if by magic, for the period of time that the committee is going to be in Athens, a space for waste was found in Temploni – but in the compost, which is illegal. So, we are denouncing yet another illegality.” He went on to declare that, “Nobody supports us because there are only a few of us.”

At the end of the meeting, the leader of the political party Laiki Sispirosi, Babis Charalambous said that unfortunately his fears following the recent unanimous Council decision had been justified and that it was not going to be easy to implement the decision.

Speaking to the local media, Mayor Kostas Nikolouzos stressed the importance of keeping things low key and dealing with the issue calmly and prudently. He also stressed how critical the situation is, “This is the final option available to us.”
