Local residents ‘suffocated’ by smoke from burning tyres

CORFU. Dense black smoke, visible from miles around, alerted local residents in the Dassia area this morning.
Two fire trucks rushed immediately to the spot only to find that a resident was burning plastic rubbish and tyres in a ‘controlled fire’. Burning tyres are of course uncontrollable as well as being a serious source of pollution.
The Municipality, the Police and the Fire Department are addressing the issue.
