Protest demonstration at Temploni landfill with police presence
CORFU. The director of the Cleaning Services was not present. Residents demand that the waste packages be removed immediately.
There was a strong police presence at the demonstration at the entrance to the Temploni landfill on Sunday morning organized by the ‘Panayia Sparmiotissa’ Society – the second society that Temploni residents have set up.
The society called it a ‘warning’ demonstration, expressing its frustration at the unbearable situation created by the waste packages, which have filled all the available space on the site.
The president of the Society, Alekos Alamanos, said that, in their efforts to gain more space, the Cleaning Services is digging another pit in an area already saturated with rubbish. They are demanding explanations from the deputy mayor for cleaning services, Spyros Aspiotis, as well as the immediate removal of the waste packages - otherwise they will take further action.
Nobody from the Municipal Cleaning Services was present. The president of the Temploni Cultural Society, Mr. Papanikopoulos, was also absent. Mr. Papanikopoulos agrees that the situation is unacceptable but has stated that the Cultural Society and ‘Panayia Sparmiotissa’ are operating on ‘different wavelengths’.
The clear message from the demonstration was, “This will no longer be tolerated. Waste is coming from everywhere (Paxos & Diapontia Islands) and we have had to put up with it. Our patience has run out. People are dying.” On television, Alekos Alamanos demanded that the Prosecutor visit the site and give them protection before things ‘go too far’.
