Today, accountability; the day after tomorrow, reimposition of 2025 increases
CORFU. The issue of improperly collected payments and possible refunds to residents is being brought before the Municipal Council by Giorgos Karydis, while the municipal administration cites financial inability.
In the shadow of the day-after-tomorrow’s meeting on the retroactive reimposition of increases in municipal taxes, tonight’s session of the Central Corfu Municipal Council is taking place. The accountability being sought regarding the refund of improperly collected payments appears, evidently, to be short-circuited by the municipal authority’s intentions in the opposite direction.
The issue is being brought forward for discussion by Giorgos Karydis, head of the Kerkyraiki Symmachia party, following Supreme Administrative Court Decision No. 480/2026. The discussion is expected to focus on charges that were imposed without a legal basis.
The municipal administration insists that the ruling of the Council of State cited formal procedural deficiencies, that there is a possibility of remedying the annulled decision, and, in any case, that the municipality is financially unable to satisfy requests for refunds or offsets.
The accountability session will begin at 20:00 in the meeting hall of the Regional Unit of Corfu, in the former Prefecture building at 13 Samara Street, with the option to participate via teleconference as well.
The agenda also includes questions regarding the operation of the Municipal Council, fines at the port of Alipa in Paleokastritsa, the Old and New Fortress, the municipality’s wildfire-prevention preparedness, and the future of Mon Repos Beach ahead of the summer season.
Earlier, at 19:00, a special session will be held for the approval of the Municipal Committee’s activity report for the second half of 2025, presented by Mayor Stefanos Poulimenos.
Both sessions will be broadcast live via livestreaming.
