CORFU. Work begins tomorrow, Tuesday, will be carried out in two phases, and is expected to be completed shortly after Easter.

An underground medium-voltage substation is being constructed by DEDDIE on the north side of Spianada Square, in the small strip of greenery beneath which runs part of the town's’s former Adams aqueduct.

According to DEDDIE’s director in Corfu, Nikos Sofianos, the project aims to meet the increased electricity demand of the Old Town. The substation, which will convert medium voltage to low voltage, will be connected to the networks in Kantouni t’ Ayiou and Capodistriou Street, where underground cabling works are also taking place simultaneously. It is estimated that it will cover electricity supply needs for at least two decades.

The station will be approximately square, covering an area of 90 square metres, with a depth of 3.5 metres and rising about half a metre above ground level. It is planned to be covered so that it blends aesthetically with the surrounding environment of the square.

Mr. Sofianos told Enimerosi that this is the most appropriate location for a project considered particularly necessary and urgent.

Work will begin tomorrow, Tuesday, March 17, will last about one weekpause temporarily, and will be completed immediately after Easter.

The issue was raised in a social media post by P. Metallinos, head of the “Allazoume Rota” municipal faction in the central municipal council. In a letter to the mayor and the president of the municipal council, he argues that the need to strengthen the electricity supply does not justify installing a substation in the green space of the Lower Square.

He calls on the municipal authority to immediately examine relocating the installation, citing aesthetic and safety concerns, and requests that the matter be brought to an urgent session of the municipal council in order to cancel the installation and move the substation to a nearby alternative location.
