Why weren΄t residents’ associations invited to discussion about Old Town?
CORFU. Letter from the Association of Permanent Residents to the Central Corfu Mayor.
The Association stated the following in its letter.
Mr. Mayor,
A few days ago, a meeting was held in your office concerning the problems of the Old Town, with the participation of the Deputy Mayor for Commerce, the official responsible for issuing permits for outdoor seating areas, representatives of the Ephorate of Antiquities, and the Board of Directors of the Catering Association.
The Association of Old Town Permanent Residents was not invited to this specific meeting, nor was any other residents’ association, and it took place without prior notification of the municipal factions. This reasonably raises questions and creates the impression that the Municipal Authority considers the participation of permanent residents unnecessary in discussions that directly concern their daily lives and quality of life.
In view of the imminent start of the tourist season, we call on you to proceed with an immediate and detailed briefing of fellow citizens on the following:
-
How many permits for the occupation of public space have been issued in the Old Town, and what is the total surface area they cover?
-
For the permits that have been issued, has the required approval from the competent Ephorate of Antiquities been granted?
-
When is the discussion and introduction of the new Regulation (K.A.L.) to the Municipal Council scheduled?
-
Regardless of the adoption of a new Regulation, will the strict implementation of the current legislation regarding the minimum unobstructed width of streets and sidewalks be ensured?
-
What immediate measures will be taken to improve the traffic problem in the Old Town?
-
What is the plan regarding parking for the vehicles of permanent residents and, at a later stage, for employees and visitors?
-
What was the exact content of the “most important discussion of the last 20 years” concerning the Old Town, as it was publicly described by the Deputy Mayor for Commerce?
Finally, we call on you henceforth to ensure what should be self-evident: the timely and institutional invitation of the Association of Permanent Residents to every meeting or consultation process concerning the Old Town, in order to safeguard transparency, participation, and the meaningful representation of the local community.
