Solution found for disposal of spoiled foodstuffs

CORFU. The information comes from sources close to the Secretary General for Solid Waste Management, Mr. Grafakos, and concerns the transfer of about 1,500 tons to a certified facility outside the island
Specialised personnel from a certified company are expected to arrive today, Monday, to handle the transport of the spoiled foodstuffs from the damaged wing of Goggakis frozen goods business.
According to well-informed sources, the sorting, loading, and transportation operations will be carried out by the company, as well as the disposal of the materials through sanitary burial at a certified facility outside Corfu.
The cost, according to the same source, will be covered through cooperation between the Ministry of Environment and the company’s insurance provider. Some early estimates—though given with caution—refer to an amount in the range of several hundred thousand euros.
Earlier, the president of Alepou community, Spyros Tsiriggakis, had expressed concerns about the worsening of the situation. On Sunday afternoon, Mayor Stefanos Poulimenos informed him about the developments in order to ease the justified worries of local residents.
