Goggakis premises completely destroyed in fire
CORFU. The fire destroyed everything. It all began with a single pallet.
Spyros Goggakis’s frozen food business in Alepou was completely destroyed by a fire that broke out in the early hours of Friday for reasons still unknown. Firefighters battled the flames throughout the night. No casualties were reported.
Initial assessments suggest that the fire may have started from a pallet of wood. The fire alarm went off and alerted the Fire Department, but the blaze spread rapidly, and the flames quickly engulfed the premises.
However, the company told Enimerosi that it believes the fire was an act of arson, as their own assessment indicates it started from outside.
In the morning, Fire Department crews were working to contain the thick smoke, while the entire operation took place under continuous rainfall.
Mayor Stefanos Poulimenos posted the following statement:
"I express my sorrow for the enormous destruction caused by the uncontrollable fire that broke out shortly after midnight at the premises of the major Corfu frozen goods trading company Goggakis, in Alepou.
The Fire Department forces, who arrived immediately at the scene and fought the blaze for many hours, were supported from the very first moment by our Municipality’s Civil Protection Service.
Unfortunately, a business that was a pillar of trade on our island has been completely consumed by the flames. It no longer exists.
We wish businessman Spyros Goggakis the strength and courage to endure this great trial and the determination to rebuild.’
