Coronavirus: PM asks for stricter checks "without discount"

ATHENS. "The current framework of measures is sufficient. It΄s a matter of proper implementation," said the PM and asked for "stricter checks with no discounts".
The Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis asked for the implementation "without discounts" of the current framework of preventive measures in yesterday's meeting in Athens.
"The current framework of measures is sufficient. It's a matter of proper implementation," said Mr. Mitsotakis and asked for "stricter checks with no discounts".
He underlined two key areas where this should be pursued: the areas with most tourism activity with tourism and the protection of sector workers there, and the avoidance of overcrowding at all times, anywhere, but especially in enclosed spaces. Moreover, he pointed out that municipalities and regions must also play their role in the maximum enforcement of all measures.
"The purpose of the meeting is very specific: to examine the operation and implementation of the measures and the recommendations for the implementation of COVID measures," said the Prime Minister at the beginning of the meeting.
"I want to be very clear: I consider the current framework of measures - based on the data we have and the recommendations of experts - to be sufficient. It is, howvever, a matter of proper implementation. So we have to send a clear message: to avoid facing a possible second wave, we have to ensure that what we have set as the absolutely necessary, minimum conditions that protect public health, are met."
Specifying the areas where special attention was needed, he added:
"I want to stress two key areas: the first is the adherence to all the healthe regulations and measures by workers, especially in the sector of tourism and catering. Mandatory use of masks and all the other measures provided for in the relevant legislation. The second is, obviously, the avoidance of crowding and gatherings, especially in enclosed spaces. We have several examples of this - health authorities' inspections at bars and indoor night clubs revealed excessive crowding of customers. I see serious problems there. Strict fines must be imposed and I am not willing to give any discounts."
Mr. Mitsotakis called on all local and regional government authorities to better supervise and regulate all areas in question. He added that all these authorities are "partners in the national, collective effort" to minimize the spread of coronavirus.
He called on all participants in the meeting to prioritize checks across the spectrum of outdoor and indoor establishments where there is crowding and gatherings of people. There will also be intensification of checks on KTEL coaches. The checks will be planned by the coordinating body supervised by the Trade & Consumer Protection General Secretariat at the Ministry of Development & Investment, based on epidemiological data provided daily by the Civil Protection General Secretariat.
