CORFU. The traditional Clean Monday lunch will cost more to prepare than last year. The price of traditional Lagana bread is €4.
The traditional Clean Monday lunch will be more expensive this year. Energy costs together with the increased costs of primary produce have pushed prices up meaning that it will be more expensive for households than last year.
Up to now business at the fishmongers in the open-air market has been sluggish. Nevertheless, vendors believe that this will change as Clean Monday approaches although they are not expecting huge sales.

"So far there hasn't been as much demand as we expected," says Spyros Stoupas, who runs his family's fishmonger business in the market. "There has been some business but nothing special. People are shopping sparingly - just enough for one meal. Customers are buying two to three items of each product and spending about €35."

Two Euros more
Although fishmongers are trying to keep prices as low as possible, they say that there will be about €1-2 more on each product.
"Clean Monday lunch will be a little bit more expensive this year due to the increaase in oil prices," Eleftheria Bouki, who owns a fishmonger stall in the open-air market, told Enimerosi. "We have tried not to raise prices to help customers but they will be about €1-2 higher than last year."

Prawns, for example, cost €18-30 per kilo depending on their size, compared to €20-24 last year and octopus is €20 compared to €17. Squid costs €17-18 at the moment but this will probably increase by €1 on Clean Monday; cuttlefish cost €14 compared to €12 and this will probably increase to as much as €16 on Monday. Shellfish will be on sale for €7-18, whilst mussels remain at €6.
One way to save money is to buy frozen products. Prawns cost €9-13 per kilo, squid €7.5, octopus €12, cuttlefish €9 and mussels €6.5.
Price of lagana way up
According to Corfu bakers, the traditional lagana bread will cost more this year as the price of flour has doubled. The price of simple lagana this year will be €4, compared to €3.20-3.50 last year, whilst those with more ingredients will cost €4.5.
The price of traditional halva this year ranges from €6.5 to €16.40 depending on the quality and flavour. However, some supermarkets are offering discounts of up to 30%. White taramosalata costs up to €10 per kilo.
On Wednesday 22 February the "Clean Monday basket" became available, offering products whose prices have increased greatly at better prices, such as some frozen seafood products and halva.
