Hostel for abused women to reopen shortly

CORFU. The hostel for women and their children who have been victims of violence is expected to reopen at the end of January or early February.
The hostel for abused women - a facility which is an absolute necessity at this time when violence, especially domestic violence, is on the rise - will be reopening shortly.
The facility will provide a secure environment for the temporary accommodation of women from all social groups (immigrants, refugees, single parents, special needs, unemployed etc.) who are victims of violence.
The hostel is located in the Central Corfu Municipality at an unpublicised address (for obvious reasons) and can accommodate 20 people.
Difficulties
This valuable community service has faced a lot of difficulties over the last few years (see the Enimerosi article here). It opened in 2013, closed in 2018 and was then included in the ESPA funding programme in September 2021 again for a two-year period. However, the hostel remained closed as the necessary personnel had not been employed.
The reopening was put off until the end of last November but was delayed due to appeals regarding the hiring of personnel Deputy Mayor for Social Welfare Andreas Skoupouras told Enimerosi. "The final personnel list is expected to be announced by ASEP shortly and it is then expected that the hostel will be able to reopen around the end of January or by 10 February at the latest," Mr. Skoupouras said. "Meanwhile the facility, inside and outside, is being cleaned and prepared, including all the plumbing, electrical and electronic equipment and systems."
The Corfu branch of AHEPA recently donated furniture to the hostel.
Security and reintegration
The Deputy Mayor for Social Welfare said the following:
"The hostel will be able to accommodate women who are victims of violence along with their children if they have them. Their stay will be for a period of up to three months, which can be extended, and during that time they are providing with accommodation, security, psychological support and advice.
The aim is for them to able to stand on their own two feet again and gradually become reintegrated into society. For this reason there will be collaboration with all the OAED employment programmes and companies so that the women can have the opportunity to access the job market and secure an income and independence from the abusive environment they found themselves in."
There will a total of nine personnel (psychologist, social worker, administration, cleaner and five guards) on renewable 12-month contracts.
How women can access the service
Women who are the victims of violence can contact Corfu Women's Advisory Service (Eth. Paleokastritsa 7 - 26610 47396) and the 24-hour SOS Line 15900. They can also contact the police directly on 100.
