Gouvia Marina fire:Statement from Corfu Port Authority
CORFU. Corfu Port Authority issued a statement late on Wednesday night regarding yesterday΄s fire at Gouvia Marina.
Corfu Port Authority was informed yesterday that moored boats had caught fire at Gouvia Marina.
Port Authority officials and a Coastguard patrol boat immediately went to the scene as did four Fire Department vehicles along with 19 firefighters and two tugs.
The fire broke out in one boat and efforts were made to get it away from neighbouring boats but the fire spread to another three vessels. As a result all of the above boats sank but there was noone on board.
Gouvia Marina personnel implemented the emergency plan, placing a floating barrier around the boats and getting firefighting equipment ready.
The Port Authority is conducting an investigation and the boats have been forbidden from leaving until the damage has been repaired and they are granted certificates of seaworthiness.
